Passion seems to be running quite high among music enthusiasts and the local populace when the announcement that one of the world’s most celebrated dancehall stars Sizzla Kolonji, Mutabaruka and Scratchylus alongside others would grace this year’s edition (the eleventh) of the International roots Homecoming Festival.
According to reports, a number of renowned performers mostly from the Caribbean who will teamed up with our very best, are preparing for what could be described as another mega musical concert.
The festival apparently serves as a connecting point for Africans and those in the Diaspora. It also serves as a good opportunity to reflect on the ugly and infamous triangular slave trade that show millions of Africans being taken across the Atlantic ocean to what was then referred to as the new world.
Organized by the Government of the Gambia through the Ministry of Tourism and Culture, the event slated for May 10th 2014 according to sources will be another breathtaking occasion in the annals of the country. So far renowned Jamaican artists such as Sizzla Kolonji, Mutabaruka, Scratchylus, Empress,as well as young upcoming artists including, Mystic Crew and Jah Prento among a host of others have confirmed their readiness to take part in the event.
In a recent interview with Daily Observer’s what’s On column, Huges Rose, the marketing director for A Graham Associates, an agency that specializes in organizing trips to Africa, noted that the artists who have already assured them of their resolve to grace the forthcoming event are big names in the Jamaican music scene.
“Most of these artistes have already visited The Gambia, so they are well aware of the country. In Jamaica people are well aware that the International Roots Homecoming festival will take place in the Gambia in May. Mutabaruka hosts a show in RUFM radio station in Jamaica during which he promotes the event. Also, there is a strong delegation coming from England and USA. So everyone is excited about this Roots Homecoming festival”said Huges.
During the festival, he added, there will be a symposium that will comprise of panelists who will dilate extensively on the theme of the festival. Rose called on Gambians especially music fans to get set for the program, as it promotes the upliftment of Africans and people of African descent throughout the world.
“It’s gonna consist of conscious and nonviolent lyrics aimed at giving guidance to Gambian youths. In that regard, I want to tell Gambians that if they want to participate in the musical jamboree to be staged by the organizing committee of the International Roots Homecoming Festival on the 10th of May 2014 at 9 o’clock, they should turn up in large numbers at the Independence Stadium to be entertained by some of Jamaica’s finests in the persons of Sizzla Kolonji, Mutabaruka, Scratchylus and Empress Reggae, Mystic Crew among a host of other guests artists”.
He then called on music enthusiasts to come with peace in their hearts and partake in another magnificent event in ambiance of solidarity and brotherhood. Watch out for more in our subsequent editions!!
