Two Gambian Paralympic athletes will participate at the Grosseto open championship from 30th May to 2nd June 2014 in Tuscany, Italy. Demba Jarju and Malang Tamba will take part in the event organised by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC).
Speaking to Observer Sports at the weekend, Sulayman Colley, the president of The Gambia National Paralympic Committee said the duo’s participation in the championship to be held in the southern European country will go a long way to help in realizing the association’s dream of sending more athletes to the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio, Brazil. “What we are looking for is to try to have a bigger number [of athletes] for Rio 2016.”
The championship in the central Italian region of Tuscany will also serve as the qualifying stage for the XXXI Olympiad that will see both Jarju and Tamba compete in the 100m & 200m and the 400m & 800m events respectively.
Colley added: “We are also working on the modalities to get the required materials for the athletes and we are hopeful by the end of the year we will get them. Meanwhile, we will continue to use the ones we have.”
He finally urged the general public to support Paralympic sports, noting that the National Paralympic Committee is really working very hard towards changing the lives and image of persons with disabilities in the country.
