“Tata Dinding did not authorize Oko Drammeh to raise funds and yes he is not dead either”

For the past 3 months, constant rumors have been spreading on social media about Gambia’s Kora sensation Tata dinding Jobarteh who’s been going through critical medical conditions.

On February 3rd 2014, DJ Kepz of Gamvibes updated his facebook page with news of Tata Dinding’s medical condition SAD NEWS...SAD NEWS...SAD NEWS...

“In our lead story on Wednesday on the Gamvibes  show at Vibes FM, Tata Dinding Jobarteh, the second King of Kora in The Gambia from Brikama Jobarteh Kunda is asking all his fans to pray for him. Tata is going under serious leg pains (both legs swollen) using a stick to walk. He has handed over the Salam band to his brother Pa Bobo as he is receiving treatment at RVTH. Gamvibes however managed to talk to both Tata and the Jobarteh Kunda Family. Please pray for him.”

On Feb 5th, Kepz posted more update confirming that the Salam band has been officially handed over to Pa Bobo “Tatadindin Jobarteh the second King of Kora in the Gambia is asking his fans to pray for him. Tata is presently receiving treatment at RVTH and MRC. Pa Bobo Joberteh has announced his come back into Gamvibes, he said he will step in for his brother whiles he recovers.”

More news got to DJ Kepz desk on February 12th as he reported that “Tatadinding Joberteh’s condition becoming more critical as our reporter in Brikama said not only are Tata’s legs affected but his hands as well”.

On February 16th, Kepz reported that more International media houses contacted him about Tata Dinding’s stories making him reach out to the family about Tata’s condition and promised to update his followers shortly. As promised, Kepz on Gambia’s Independence day February 18th further quoted Tata dinding as saying “thanks to all the fans and love ones for their wishes, i will be ok soon by the grace of Allah". I am taking local and traditional treatment now and I’m seeing some positive improvement in my condition”

Things started taking a different twist on February 19th. . Tata Dinding who said a day before that his condition was improving started hearing unfortunate news about his condition. He was accused of being dead. DJ Kepz posted that Tata Dinding denied allegations that he is dead. Kepz quoted Tata of saying “Tell Gambians that I’m still here getting stronger and better. Inshallah, I will soon be on my stage to entertain Gambians”

To make matters worse, “Gambia’s biggest promoter of all times” Oko Drammeh of the Sotokoto Band posted an update on his facebook page asking the world to help Tata dinding financially.  The half page long post reads:
“URGENT MATTER.IMMIADIATE ASSISTANCE NEEDED!
The Griot and music legend Tata Din Din jobarteh is critically sick and moving only by clutches. He cannot afford the medical financial costs. The artists are not fairly taken care of. A Griot is a library and this we all know as the embodiment of our culture and history. We all have to be conscious on this, sympathetic, generous and obey one of the Commandments of God and that is charity. This fine gentleman, a flag of Gambia is slowly fading. Why do we stand aside and look, to see our prophets die prematurely and some of say it's a part of life, thinkers and artists don't matter. The motor of our life as Gambians is: Caring and Sharing. This is the Gambian way!

We need to restore his health and put him back to the front for the nation and his family. He is a community belonging and he has served his role in our society well and therefore the society should play their part. Let us uphold our values in a positive way."A people without culture is like a tree without roots".

The Gambian Kora emperor Tata Dindin Jobarteh has been a catalyst in the evolution and re-invention of "GAMBIAN KORA MUSIC" to more accurately offer contemporary smooth Kora sounds. Truly Tata Dindin Jobarteh has for the most part created forms sustainable for the expression of his genius.

Even though Oko Drammeh meant well and was applauded by a lot of folks, his action was not appreciated by Tata dinding and the Jobateh family at all as seen in the response reproduced below.

Can you pls stop spreading news on social media and help the legend in secret. The best of your charity is the one that hasn't been made public, I just spoke to my legend, Tata and he felt shock about the news. Though he confirmed his sickness, but he doesn't want to be seen as a beggar and for sure his condition is far more better than before. Pls let's help our hero in secret and not using the social media to make him seen as dying. Sorry uncle Oko, but I have no doubt that you can assist the man in financing his medical bill if there is any as an intentional producer. I am sorry to put this on here, but I have been speaking to Tata and just spoke to him couple of mn before I put this comment. Allah will pay us for whatever we spend in helping the sick, especial our legend like Tata Dindin Jobarteh. Sorry if I offend anyone, but this is the truth...

Omar Joof It is disheartening to note how some people simply indulge in spreading all kinds of news, sometimes with a slant to disparage the person involved. This is evil!

Mohammed Nk Fatty Very true, if you want to help do it for the sake of Allah and you will find your reward with him but if you do it for people to know and talk about it, then that's for shaitaan and you will have no reward from Allah.

Gambiankolu Kibaro Exactly my dear sister, this is really disgusting when people start blowing trumpets about this. I spk to Tata, u know how closed am I to this noble family and to my surprise all this publicity was done without his consent. May God help us all, but will call after my show, on Viber

On February 20th, Tatadindin Jobarteh  commented on Oko’s post “THIS IS MISUNDERSTANDING MR OKU WILL NEVER TRY TO DISTROY MY IMAGE, HE IS A GOOD MAN AND A FRIEND.HE IS TRYING TO HELP,BUT THANK GOD AM HEALING BETTER.

There was silence for few days. It was not until February 26th 2014, when DJ Kebsz of Gamvibes updated his listeners again “Tatadinding complains to Gamvibes that there are some people who want to make money out of his sickness. He said he was surprise when he read on the newspaper that he is looking for financial assistance, He said those comments are not from him.”

This statement (if Tata said it) confirms that Oko Drammeh did not consult with the Jobateh Family before publishing such a story on behalf of their loved one.

On march 15th  2014,  more update came from DJ Kepz “THE RUMOURS IS NOT TRUE......
..Tatadindin Jobarteh tells Gamvibes Info.
Tata Dinding Jobarteh, one of the country’s leading Kora Musician recently told  gamvibes that spread rumors in his town Brikama that he has died is not true… DJ Kepz quoted Tata to have said that “ TELL GAMBIANS THAT AM STILL HERE INFACT GETTING STRONGER AND BETTER, INSALLAH I WILL SOON BE ON MY STAGE TO ENTERTAIN GAMBIANS”.RECENTLY RUMOURS WAS RIFE IN BRIKAMA THAT OUR KORA KING PASSED AWAY. HE RUSHED TO FMB RADIO IN BRIKAMA YESTERDAY EVENING TO CLEAR THE AIR....MORE INFO ON TATAS CONDITION COMING SOON....

On March 18th 2014, DJ Kepz posted his last update about Tata Dinding in which Tata said  “Here I come again.  The rumors is still getting stronger in town that I died, in fact am told that the first people to announce my death is some Gambian artists. Please, tell them am taking my final medications now and am getting stronger billahi wallahi. Inshalla I will soon be on my stage. I had to switch off my phones; the whole world is calling me. I’m here people!” TATADINGDING.

On the same day, What’s-On- Gambia published a story about Tata on their facebook page which added flame to the fire. As a result, DJ Kepz and the Jobarteh family facilitated an interview with the Gambian Talents Entertainment desk leading to the publication of this story.  We contacted Mr Oko Drammeh for his reaction but to no avail. We were supposed to have Rebellion The Recaller as our Guest on the Gambian Talents show this Friday March 21st 2014. Unfortunately, we are sorry to announce that our guest for this week will be Tata Dinding and the Jobarteh Family.
